“AFVBK & Co is an artists platform formed officially in beginning of 2009. It was started by art students who, confronted with the shortage of affordable housing and atelier space caused by the ever progressing gentrification of the city, decided to take matters in their own hands. At the present moment there are around 10 individuals, both dutch and non-dutch, active in the platform alongside their day job or studies. The purpose of the platform is to, through both direct action (squatting) and political negotiations create room to organize small-scale events, activities and studio-, project- and living space for the benefit of young people, artists, students, children and people living in the close surrounding. These activities include for example art exhibitions, theater, children’s activities, art-, music- or sports related workshops, a day cafe with a small affordable restaurant and a exchange free-shop. The platform is also open for initiatives taken by individuals or groups from the outside. AFVBK & Co will take the organizational responsibility to make a selection in regards to such initiatives so as to maintain a respectful and open atmosphere where people from different areas can work and participate alongside each other. The primary guidelines of this selection are; that the contents of the activities proposed are not offensive in ways we deem unacceptable (as in regards to for example racism or sexism), that they are not only for private benefit and that the people involved have a respectful and aware attitude towards the space, the people working and living there and the neighbourhood.

“AFVBK&CO is een kunstenaars platform dat begin 2009 tot stand is gekomen. Het is opgericht door verscheidende kunst studenten die, geconfronteerd met het voortdurend tekort aan betaalbare huisvesting en atelier ruimte (veroorzaakt door de steeds verdere gentrificatie van de stad), besloten het heft in eigen hand te nemen. Op dit moment zijn rond de tien individuen, zowel Nederlands als buitenlands, actief binnen het platform naast hun dagelijkse baan en/of studie. Het doel van het platform is om, door zowel directe actie (het kraken van panden) als politiek lobbyen, ruimte te creëren voor kleinschalige evenementen, sociale en culturele activiteiten en studio-, project-, en woonruimte waar jongeren, kunstenaars, studenten, kinderen en buurtbewoners van kunnen profiteren. Deze activiteiten omvatten onder andere (maar niet uitsluitend) kunst exposities, theater, kinderactiviteiten, kunst-, muziek-, of sportworkshops, een dag cafe met een kleinschalig betaalbaar restaurant en een weggeefwinkel. Het platform staat ook open voor initiatieven genomen door individuen of groepen van buiten. AFVBK&Co neemt dan de verantwoordelijkheid op zich om een organisatorisch werkbare selectie van deze initiatieven te maken. Dit om zo een respectvolle en open atmosfeer te waarborgen waarin mensen vanuit verschillende disciplines en achtergronden naast én met elkaar kunnen werken. De voornaamste richtlijnen voor selectie zijn; dat de voorgestelde activiteiten niet over onze morele grenzen gaan (wat bijvoorbeeld het geval zou zijn bij racisme en seksisme), dat ze niet of in ieder geval niet voornamelijk voor persoonlijk gewin zijn en dat de betreffende mensen een respectvolle en bewuste attitude hebben tegenover de ruimte, de mensen die daar werken en/of wonen en de buurt.”
